It would have to be a special dvd player that plays .avi's. It is doubt full that yours does.

No. Only a DVD-R can play in a DVD player. A CD-R plays in CD Rom drives. You would need to burn to a DVD-R to play in a DVD player.
You'd have to use a DVD, then use a program to burn the avi file onto the DVD in a DVD format. Takes the full length of the movie to do, which sucks. Unless there is another program that I don't know about...in which case, let me know.
If your player can play "divx" it can .

Here's one at Walmart

yes, done it myself ... as long as you burn it as a "VCD" ... get NERO
yes, it should play fine. however, what you speak of may not work because .avi formats aren't widely supported on their own (when burned to a disc). it should go on the disc fine, though if you can extract it.
You need a DVD player that is capable of playing VideoCD or Super VideoCD.

You then need a video rendering software such as Nero , Pinnacle Studio or Ulead Video Studio to render the CD
You should be able to play a CD-r but i don't believe you can play a .avi extension on the DVD player
