You can't just change the extension. HTML files require the HTML language in the document to render its content. At the moment browsers are not able to open Word docs in their native formats. You could however go to Google Docs, create an account, upload the file and view it there.

You don't?

You use Microsoft Word to view Word documents. HTML and Word's format are completely different.

Some browsers will spawn Word for you when you open a Word document and some services may offer to render Word documents in HTML but I don't think you're going to have much luck using a browser alone. Maybe someone has written an add-in to do this but I wouldn't hold my breath.
the answer is simple,

open the word document with MS Word, that you want to see via browser and go to "save as" and save it as HTML file.

done, and point your browser to the HTML file that you are saved.
